Ladies 4th XI Vs Tring 3

Saffron Walden Ladies 4ths travelled to Tring for their first league match of the season having been promoted at the end of last season. The drivers, Julia Magness (Jock) and Vanessa Hill were not looking forward to this match as they only had sufficient players to fill the cars which meant no substitutes and as usual in September it was very hot!

Walden started well with Lydia Michaelides playing some great passes to Jos Goddard on the right. Goddard gained ground up the right before playing the ball to Emily Dan who in turn made their defence look pedestrian as she sent ball after ball into the D. Martha Baudains on her debut and Michaelides  connected with many of these crosses and were unlucky to open the scoring within a couple of minutes of the start. As Tring played the ball out to the left, Katherine Palmer and Lizzie Roberson tried to teach their attackers that you have to go round players not straight into them as they kept taking the ball off the Tring players and passing to Hollie Anderson in the middle who then started the process up the right all over again.

Midway through the first half after a melee in the D, Michaelides put the ball in the net. With some great defending from Holly Stanford the ball never got into the last quarter of the pitch for most of the first half and Walden were rewarded for their persistence when Baudains scored on her debut.

Tring came out with renewed vigour in the second half and the more mature players in the team (those old enough to drive) had to do some defending.  After a strong attack by Tring, Katy Borgeson in goal got her first and only touch of the ball in the game. Walden continued to make great runs into the oppositions D and Michaelides got her second and Walden’s third midway through the second half.

A great team performance which shows the depth of young talent at the Walden club.
