Mens 1's v Bishops Stortford (22/10/11)

With 3 x 15 year olds in the starting line up, SW first team once again proved that age and experience can count for little as they beat a very good Bishops Stortford side 5 - 3 away on Saturday. Walden struggled to get going as BS dominated possession for 1st 10 minutes and BS had a goal disallowed after the umpire failed to play the advantage. Walden's energetic mid field then took control and a quick break down the right and inch perfect pass to Tom Greig from Robert Hartle gave Walden the lead. Tom Greig then quickly scored his second after another good break down the right. Alex Flynn added Walden's 3rd from a Short corner and Guy Flynn fired in Waldens fourth after being played in by Andy Boyd. Halftime 4 - 0. The 2nd half was a different affair. Walden looked too relaxed and over confident while BS were fired up and determined to make ammends. Stortford were awarded a flick after a foot on the line which the former Welsh international, Anthony Colclough, put away with ease. Also the impressive Vernon Brown was becoming a bit of a handful for the Walden defence. Stortford started winning a few more short corners and it was only a matter of time before one of them went in. Tom Chapman made the first save only to see the 2nd strike whistle past him into the top corner. 4 - 2. Walden's mid field were looking tired and Stortford pulled another goal back after more good work from Brown. 4 - 3. This seemed to galvanise the Walden side. Michael Gaughan, Ali Cowper, Chris Boyd and Matt Edwards started winning one on one tackles in central defence and Walden started reproducing some of the form from the first half. Alex Flynn took control of the mid field and David Boyd and Tom Greig started running the Stortford defence ragged. The game was made safe 5 minutes before the end with a wonderful reverse stick flick from Greig giving him his hatrick and Walden the win they deserved. Walden will be looking to extend their unbeaten run 6 when they take on Stevenage at home on Saturday. Also Chappie pulled off a brilliant stick save low to his right from a ferocious short corner strike.
